Water Problems
As the universal solvent, water absorbs some of almost everything it makes contact with. This can lead to many issues that can pose a threat to your home and your health.
Hardness Hard Water occurs when water absorbs calcium and magnesium from limestone, marble or chalk deposits. While hard water is common, and not a health concern, it can be problematic. Hard water issues include stains and scale on sinks, baths, toilet bowls and around the base of taps, as well as blocked showerheads, white marks and scale deposits on kettles.
pH A low pH level (potential of Hydrogen) will result in acid water. Damage to sinks, faucets, hot water tanks, as well as drainage and supply lines can all be caused by water with a low pH level. Problems that develop due to low pH, such as pitting on plumbing fixtures, can lead to extensive repair costs or the need for replacement.
Iron If you have a well, iron is likely to be the primary contaminant in your water. Though the levels of iron found in normal drinking water do not pose a health risk, higher concentrations of iron can cause problems. Examples of this include water that has a metallic taste as well as orange or rust-colored staining of sinks, toilet, bathtubs and clothes.
Sulfur The unpleasant "rotten egg" odor, which is a common tainted water complaint, is caused by sulfur, a colorless gas. Sulfur problems can lead to serious plumbing damage.
Chlorine Chlorine, an agent used to treat water, can cause health risks when found in levels too high for drinking and home usage. This is due to the fact that when Chlorine mixes with organics in water, trihalomethanes (THMs) are formed, which are thought to be cancer-causing agents.
